The best bed bug prevention is awareness of the problem, knowing what the bugs look like, and taking simple actions to stop bed bugs from getting established. All stages of the bed bug can be seen with the naked eye. Be cautious when traveling and inspect your home regularly so you can remain bed bug free.

When you return from holidays leave your suitcase outside on the balcony, or in the garage or basement or some area away from the beds and couch. Do not just come home and throw the bags on the bed! As soon as you are able, launder all fabrics taken on your holidays, then wipe down or vacuum out the cracks and folds of the suitcase. Remember that it doesn’t matter to the bugs if you stay in Five Star resorts or funky backpacking hostels, they will latch on to you regardless of how much you paid!

If you do pick up a few bugs regular vacuuming of the cracks and crevices of bed frames, mattress folds and couch creases will help to remove them and stop them from getting well established. Putting clothes and bedding through the hot cycle of the dryer will kill all bed bug adults, nymphs and eggs that may be on them. Do this once per week, more often is not necessary.

No used furniture, please. A great deal on the inter-web for a cheap sidetable or bed frame or couch could end up being a very costly mistake! Clothes and knick knacks and other small items from vintage stores are fine because they can be wiped down or laundered, and if you really want a piece you can always rent a heat chamber from us and heat treat it. And we shouldn’t need to mention it, but it keeps happening – don’t take mattresses left out on the street! Ever! Under any circumstances!

If you live in an apartment or townhouse you are more at risk because the bed bug can and will travel between units on wiring and piping as well as down the halls. This means you need to be more aware and more diligent, but there is no need for paranoia – these are just bugs and it is a problem that can be solved.

Bed bugs love clutter – the more clutter and stuff you have around the beds and couches the easier it is to miss finding newly introduced bed bugs- so get rid of your junk and clutter and stuff around the beds and couches!
