Fire ants are on the march across BC

European Fire Ants pack a sting and they are steadily moving across BC. First discovered in BC over 15 years ago they are now confirmed from southern Vancouver Island and on the mainland from Vancouver out to Chilliwack, and in pockets in the Okanogan. This ant is considered one of the top 100 most invasive species in the world and it can take over an entire yard and garden in just a few years.

European fire ants prefer to live under rocks and garden edging and the cool shady parts of your yard. Once established they will also live right in the lawn, creating small nests just below the turf line. Because they don’t build a mound and they don’t typically come inside homes, many people don’t really notice them until they are well established. Unfortunately,if you happen to disturb their nests or step on them, they may swarm and sting you, your kids or your pets.
